The Martínez-Rivera’s (Mal)adaptive Lab for Neurobehavioral Plasticity uses preclinical models of learning- & memory-based decisions and extinction-centered approaches to elucidate the underlying neurobiology of a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders such as Substance use disorders, Depression, Social dynamics and Post-traumatic & Obsessive-Compulsive disorders (PTSD/OCD). We aim to reveal and reprogram adaptive and maladaptive states and traits at the behavioral, cellular, and molecular levels. Using viral and gene editing tools facilitates the molecular and behavioral reprogramming of phenotypes that include 1) reward-seeking behaviors, 2) social behaviors (e.g., aggressive or depressive-like behaviors, and 3) approach/avoidance biases under conflict or stress situations.
In parallel, we foster an atmosphere of excellence, respect, and inclusion by implementing diverse, enriching, and outreach activities such as philosophical/science retreats, journal clubs, lab meetings, community activities, collaborations, and teaching and mentoring sessions. We actively employ scientific rigor and reproducibility practices to ensure responsible research conduct and a healthy and friendly environment.
